We have been wanting to do a review on the DJI Mic portable recording system since we first used it. It is easily my new favorite piece of audio equipment, and it offers great 2-person wireless sound quality for a great price! This setup will not be ideal for all settings, but it is great for casual recording podcast interviews, field recordings, and vlogging. Content creators working on video interviews and streaming productions will have more value working with the DJI Mic. It is truly a full wireless digital microphone/recorder solution to offer vivid audio quality to simultaneously capture two subjects to a DSLR/mirrorless cameras or iOS/Android smartphone. The system records clear and reliable audio at up to 820′ via two miniature clip-on omnidirectional mics/transmitters, which double as backup recorders for worry-free wireless. The tiny touch screen receiver can either be mounted onto your DSLR hot shoe, DJI Action 2 camera or plugged directly into the Lightning/USB port of a smartphone or laptop. I have been using it with an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Once you open the box, the beauty starts with the charging case. When you crack the lid open, all components come to life flashing lights. Right out of the case you have fast paired devices, meaning the transmitters and the receiver automatically pair and fast! Opening and closing the cases acts as a trigger I found as well. The design houses the receiver with any of the three adapters, so you don’t have to worry about taking them on and off if you use one regularly.

BONUS – charge as soon as you either place the transmitters or receiver in the charging case. Just make sure to complete the initial setup and you’ll be ready recording great quality audio in no time.

Wearable and Portable Microphones

  • For a truly wireless experience, conveniently attach a transmitter to whatever you’re wearing via the integrated back clip (or by using the clip magnets) without having to wire yourself or your talent.
  • You can also hold the transmitter in your hand and use it as a handheld microphone. Use the transmitter as a lavalier mic (no need for a separate mic), or operate it as a traditional bodypack transmitter by plugging an external lav mic (available separately).
  • The internal mic features an omnidirectional pickup pattern that ensures reliable speech capture, even if mic placement is less than ideal; your subject’s voice is captured with clarity, intelligibility, and consistency.
  • Weighing approximately 1 oz, the miniature transmitter is comfortable to wear, easy to position, and easy to conceal on camera.

High-Quality Mono/Stereo Audio with Safety Track and Post-Production Flexibility

  • The Safety Track mode enables you to record a secondary audio track (in mono) as a backup with a lower volume of -6 dB (different from the main audio track), helping to safeguard your audio in case of unforeseen level spikes. This can be turned on via the receiver’s touchscreen. It sends a gentle vibration to the mic pack.
  • DJI Mic allows you to record high-fidelity, professional audio by accurately reproducing tone across a wide frequency range. This comes in handy when bringing levels up in editing/post-production (Adobe Audition).
  • The two microphones can be combined and recorded in mono or recorded separately with one person on the left and the other person on the right. This allows isolation of each person’s dialog for individual level adjustment later in post.
  • Worried? Monitor while recording via a 3.5mm headphone output to tell if you have a clean audio signal.

More on the Safety Track & Built-In Recorders

  • I found that both transmitters have onboard recording capability with 8GB of storage, up to 15 hours of backup recording (not 14 like DJI claims)! This allows you to have backup audio saved to each transmitter in case of wireless interference and dropouts. You can also use the transmitters as standalone recorders.
  • Transfer the 48 kHz/24-bit mono WAV files to your computer quick and easy via the USB Type-C and you’re ready to import into Premiere Pro, or another NLE.

My thoughts after using the DJI Mic.

  • Enjoy 5.5 hours of battery life from the transmitters, 5 hours from the receiver, and up to 15 hours with the charging case.
  • The transmitters are lighter than I thought, especially with the magnetic clips. The magnets are really strong, here is the warning for the DJI Mic Back Clip and Clip Magnets.
  • The magnetic tiles hold up pretty well, some too thin and too thick caused dropping clothing. Thicker material may require using the clip.
  • The included windscreens work well to keep normal wind from interfering with your audio, however outdoor/windier environments might pose a challenge for some post help.
  • The built-in microphones feature omnidirectional audio for shoots where audio is coming from several directions.

My thoughts after using the DJI Mic.

  • Enjoy 5.5 hours of battery life from the transmitters, 5 hours from the receiver, and up to 15 hours with the charging case.
  • The transmitters are lighter than I thought, especially with the magnetic clips. The magnets are really strong, here is the warning for the DJI Mic Back Clip and Clip Magnets.
  • The magnetic tiles hold up pretty well, some too thin and too thick caused dropping clothing. Thicker material may require using the clip.
  • The included windscreens work well to keep normal wind from interfering with your audio, however outdoor/windier environments might pose a challenge for some post help.
  • The built-in microphones feature omnidirectional audio for shoots where audio is coming from several directions.
