I am lucky to have worked on a fun fitness shoot with an amazing Lagree certified fitness instructor Seggan Sanders… she also happens to be my best friend and wife. Our goal on this shoot was to get new video content for Seggan as well as testing out some alternative workflow ideas going forward for me. I wanted to get the specifics between using an iPhone 13 Pro Max for these style videos, or using the Sigma fp digital camera. This also includes lenses and other equipment for both the iPhone and the Sigma fp. I know these are apples to oranges for a comparison, but I wanted to review my overall experience, end results, storage space and ease of use for both workflows. Keep in mind these were for a 35 & 45 minute long shoots in our small home studio. Let’s get on set!

Working in a new space for a photo/video shoot with Seggan Sanders’ Lagree On-Demand Microformer Classes was inspirational. I have worked most of my life now with Seggan, and she is always very professional and has the best attitude. It doesn’t hurt that I think she is also the best model 🙂 Once the lights were all on, mic test done and both of us settled, it was time…action!

It was only a few minutes total before we were recording the FULL BODY 40 MINUTES ON THE MICRO. Seggan was moving and shaking with her routine! I didn’t have to do much work besides following back and forth, and I mean that. Seggan needed no direction, nor did the iPhone! It did a great job with keeping her in focus with the built in autofocus but if it didn’t I am not worried, the Cinema Mode allows you to fix it later. Where the camera did suffer was the automatic white balance. I knew I had some extra work to do in post to try and match color shifting between clips. Also I watched as the lighting changed too drastically while panning, I got the same issue. None of this bothered Seggan though, she kept on.

It seemed that working with LED’s is not the easiest for the iPhone camera sensor. It wanted to make everything more neon hot than it was. I am aware that you can use apps to lock focus, ISO to achieve more control, but I wanted to stick strictly to native Cinema Mode on the iPhone. I am very comfortable with the iPhone, it is my go to camera typically, always takes fantastic photos and videos. Nothing fancy, and not too much editing needed for most videos. It really does get most things I need for clients and myself. It still lacks some of the “professional” features that still garner the “yeah, but it’s cell phone video.” I find the iPhone Cinema Mode video at 1080p to be fantastic. Add in the fact that you can adjust the focus AFTER the fact, and that is power.

With that being said, I was still a little nervous going into the first video with the iPhone 13 Pro Max for our first time in our home studio space and in the hot summer. I think it turned out great, but that got me thinking about trying another camera for the next video.

iPhone, it’s time to meet the Sigma fp Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera

The second and more recent video OBLIQUES ON FIRE | 35 MINUTES was shot with the Sigma fp mirrorless digital camera with a Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 & Sigma 45mm f/2.8 (both DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L-Mount). It is definitely not a cell phone, it is camera. The camera itself is built very strong and sturdy. Seggan was ready and waiting long before I was setup. This required a full 30 minutes of me getting all batteries, balancing the cage and tripod. Adding a monitor on one side and the SmallRig handles made it feel comfortable and balanced. However, holding the Sigma fp off the tripod is not easy, there is not much to grab onto. I do have a NiceyRig handle that is nice for run/gun slim style.

Seggan was at it again, no instructions needed. This time required less takes on the Sigma. Smooth and steady, we were at the end of her shoot! We had a lot of fun on set creating two videos (at the time of this writing.) The videos feature Seggan instructing the class on the Microformer as if she has done it for years, which she hasn’t. I was quickly taken back at how she took control of the flow in an organic way. I didn’t have to worry about what she might do next, even though this was the first time I had seen the workout, because she was explaining as if reading my mind. Anticipating that I might wonder where we are going next, she calmly let me know we were going to “take those hand’s down to the front of the carriage.” “Thank you,” I thought. The next 45 minutes went smooth with the same steady voice guiding me through the workout. Admittedly, I caught myself a few times not paying attention to the camera as I was fixated with the routine she was displaying. I can’t wait for the next one!

My thoughts after using both types of cameras for similar style videos.

• The iPhone sets up much quicker and easier, which is 100% expected since it is a cell phone.
• The Sigma fp is robust with more to choose from when it comes to rigging up with lights, lenses, mics, and accessories with ease.
• The DJI MIC wireless lavaliere worked extemly well with the windscreen on – cutting out majority of the unwanted noise of three fans (on full blast)!
• The autofocus is much better on the iPhone. I read about the issues other videographers have expressed about the Sigma fp, and I also felt the pain.
• iPhone storage (on the device or iCloud) is still something to monitor and consider when the recording times increase.
• Sigma fp has huge file size requirements for 4k RAW. It can also record smaller .mov files, no issue to get file size smaller – if RAW is not necessary.
• iPhone long recording times while shooting in 4k or at Cinema Mode 1080p video do save large files, but not nearly as large as Sigma fp CinemaDNG files.
• iCloud 2TB storage works well for backups, but doesn’t show up to playback/edit when it’s time. This requires me to transfer/save to another drive anyway.
• Sigma fp to a Samsung T7 2TB SSD is faster and easier to get into editing from.
• I enjoy being able to have the full frame of the Sigma fp. As well as being able to use an array of lenses and even adapt to use Canon lenses.
• I have tried lens/filter adapters for the iPhone, and there are some good options out there. In my experience however, the annual changes that seem to come with the each generation of iPhone can cause design changes, making some accessories obsolete.
• The Sigma fp has a nice touch screen that you can use as well, I prefer to turn it off to avoid accidentally changing a setting. I can also lock the screen so that I don’t have to worry about it.
• The Sigma fp files do cause some extra post compression work with getting the file size small enough when certain platforms have size restrictions.
• I did find slimRAW to be extremely handy (like many other people had suggested, thank you) with the CinemaDNG Sigma fp files. This helped me get the 600 GB RAW files down to 90 GB!
• The firmware updates that Sigma continues rolling out only seem to improve the camera’s potential with video. The new false colors feature is very handy to properly expose skin tones.
• Both Sigma lenses are built very well, very sharp, no issues at all. Very happy with their performance, minus the autofocus.

AUDIO – DJI MIC

iPhone – Seggan was able to perform the first routine and the audio came across clean and clear with the included windscreen on. The receive plugs directly into the iPhone Lightning port and recorded directly into the Cinema mode video.

Sigma – Seggan was able to perform both routines without any audio issues at all. The audio was recorded wireless again, but this time the transmitter was hidden in a cage around the Sigma. It then comes out of the Receiver via supplied 3.5mm cable directly into the Sigma fp’s 3.5 mm stereo mini jack. The DJI Mic continues to show how versatile it is and how handy the included accessories are that come with the DJI Mic.

TRIPOD – Manfrotto-Bogen sticks with 701HDV fluid head

iPhone – The iPhone did not require much. It was situated into a basic cell phone tripod mount into the quick release plate’s 1/4″ thread screw. Used the tripod as I normally would and shot the video with ease. It does feel like you have to be a bit more delicate with your touch. I did put the iPhone into a DJI OM 5 gimbal, which is a fantastic pair for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Sigma – The Sigma fp was mounted into a SmallRig cage (that I love!). The quick release plate’s 1/4″ thread screw into the cage base. This felt like I had more control and had more stability when moving. Having a lens, witebalance controls and Used the tripod as I normally would and shot the video with ease.

LIGHTS – Various LED’s

iPhone and Sigma – 6 colored LED bank light attached the truss, 2 NANlite PavoTube T8-7X, a few SmallRig square lights and other colored LED’s (including rope lights) in various ways to eventually light the scene the way we wanted.

MONITOR – iPhone 13 Pro Max screen

iPhone – I could have sent this to an external monitor, TV, or various other areas, but I was trying to go with what I would really use in the setup, and I would just use the iPhone screen. It is really sharp and I don’t have many issues. The size is not too far off from the Atomos Ninja V. Maybe next time though.

Sigma – Atomos Ninja V HDMI to MicroHDMI (Type D) cable needed for the Sigma fp. The additional setup and weight was worth it. The focus assist and zebra lines made filming, exposing, LOCKING white balance and keeping me less stressed during the shoot.

I am excited to do more with the Sigma and find out a better setup for other setups. I will be picking it over the iPhone for the next few videos to continue finding more techniques, tips and tricks. The time it takes to setup is worth it in my opinion. Besides, I will realistically have my iPhone in my pocket incase I need something faster. Both of the routines that we filmed were so much fun, that’s what you get with Seggan though!
